One of my favorite photographs I have from high school is of a duck. At Hume Lake one summer, I went on a hike up a creek with a couple of cabin mates and our counselor, Daniel. We got lucky and can came across a deer sipping water from a stream not further than 10 feet away. Daniel had his camera and captured the moment saying the deer was in its natural habitat. For the rest of the hike we gave him a hard time about the phrase 'in its natural habitat' and pointed out a duck on the lawn in its natural habitat. He snapped the picture and gave me a copy later.
I rode my bike today along a man-made creek. I saw ducks down in the water and thought of that story. Unfortunately I did not have the camera along, but I went home to grab it to capture these ducks in their 'natural habitat'. I scared away the first few ducks by climbing down the hill to close to them. However, an elderly couple happened to be walking by and stopped to check on me, concerned I was trapped. After a short lecture on safety from the lady, her husband told me about a dozen ducks were gathered at the next bridge (< 1/2 mile away). I went there to capture these pictures; I choose to climb down further away and use the zoom lens. I really like the reflection in the water of this first one. The way the stream flows the water there stays fairly stagnant while other areas are turbid.
